Current Event #4:”Squirrel population increases in Maine”

York, Maine in the center of wildlife have had people feeding and protecting squirrels. This has caused a high increase in the squirrel population. This is a high risk for drivers with squirrels crossing roads drivers could have squirrels hit there car. Having more squirrels has meant more resourses for the center of wildlife. There are right now 50 squirrels in care currently so its stressing the resources. In 2013 there were 132 orphaned or injured squirrels in care but now there are more than 400! In the past decade we have been watching the breeding seasons and we thought there had been one breeding season but now we found there are really two.

My thoughts on this event are that the squirrels even if there are some dangers with how many there are, we should still take care of them and let them live a long and healthy life. Even with cars running them over and people hunting them, we can still if nothing else keep this species alive and breathing. Now since there are many species going extinct we should keep one alive. My feeling on this event is im really happy that we are keeping these species alive. If we had let them go on without human help, they would die and go extinct so thanks to us humans we are not going to let that happen. I honestly hope that eventually we can get a way to make a 100% safe place for squirrels to live.
